So, Anna Harrington has done it again. If you’re looking for adventure and mystery, some intrigue, some spicy and steamy, plus characters you’ll really like, look no further. I’ve been following Clayton since the first book in the Lords of the Armory series (An Inconvenient Duke). He’s actually one of my very favorite characters and I’ve waited to learn more about him. All we know to this point is he is an undersecretary for the Home Office, one of Marcus‘s soldiers, and always there to put things right. He is beyond reproach and, frankly, gorgeous 🔥 but we never hear anything about him going from bed to bed or causing any sort of ruckus that’s not for King & Country.

So of course, I was really happy to hear that he was finally getting his own story. His own happily ever after, right?  Ah, but his story is one of the most complicated ones and you’re going to wonder if that happily ever after can actually happen because, overachiever he is, he can’t just fall in love with a normal woman. Oh no, Clayton has to fall in love with an actual princess 👑. He may be a General now, but he’s still a commoner soldier, so it’s not going to be easy.

And what a princess, Cordelia is from a small country where, clearly, they feel that her only worth is whether she can find a British duke to marry. But she is young and beautiful and intelligent and principled . . . and someone is trying to kill her. And when someone is trying to kill you in Britain, the only one who can save you is Clayton Elliot. Fate brought them together. But, is fate strong enough, because he really is absolutely unsuitable for any princess. He’s got his own demons and skeletons in the closet. But the thing is, so does the princess.

I want to say this is a fitting end to the series, but you never know if this is the actual end as there are a couple other Lords of the Armory who have been mentioned, but we have not seen more of. Perhaps they will have novellas or short stories in an anthology or two? But Clayton and Cordelia’s story does wrap everything up in the series beautifully. It might be one of my favorite books in the series. Clayton is definitely one of my favorite people. FYI, fans of the series, we do get to see our favorites in this novel, even Pearce who we haven’t seen much of since his novel, An Unexpected Earl (I 💖 him).

This definitely is a stellar read. I am warning you that there is a lot of mystery and intrigue, so if you are looking for simple romance, just be patient. But the mystery and intrigue is important throughout the series because, if it weren’t for that, there would be no need for the Lords!

If the author should read this, I would love to read more about Madame Noir ❤! There’s a lot going on at her past and so many questions in her present that make me want to know more about her. She is such a fun character. And she’s got secrets!

*Fans of the blog know that once the book has been out for a while, it will get the madcap, full Squirrel, bananas recap treatment that often verges on spoiler territory, BUT right now, I want to you to grab this amazing book and stay up all night reading it (like I did). So recap will show up in a few months!
